I took something shapeless wrapped in gray, tattered wool, not thinking it was anything alive. But it was.
Two tiny bright and alert brown eyes focused on my face, as if in greeting.
The old woman turned to go, walking back into the jungle.
“Hey! Hey!” I yelled. “Take your baby!”
“She’s your baby now,” the woman said, her rags beginning to merge into the foliage.
“But I don’t want.…” I began. But of course I did want, with a terrible force. And I no longer wanted just any baby. I wanted this particular baby, who was starting to relax in my arms, cuddling up to my chest, and listening to my heart beat.
