BAG Presentation & Workshop
Through the Santa Fe Book Arts Group, we will be presenting on our work as Maternal Mitochondria on Saturday, June 8, 2019, 1 pm to 3 pm in the Santa Fe Community College Boardroom. This is free and open to the public. Then on Sunday, June 9, there will be a workshop on suminagashi & poetry from 9 am to 4 pm at the Santa Fe Community College, Room 710. The workshop is $75 and is only open to members of BAG. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact BAG directly.
This workshop will teach each participant to create suminagashi, Japanese-inspired marbling on paper. We will work with low-impact materials—water trays, ink, and inexpensive paper. We will also create poetry based on “weathergrams”—short poems about the environment and our inner selves. The workshop will be structured so that text and marbling can be combined for a final product. You will have pieces to take home that can be collaged, used in bookmaking, or hung as ephemera to weather out into the atmosphere. All materials will be provided, but if you would like to bring your own supplies please refer to our earlier guide.
Fairy Houses: A fairy house themed permanent geocache will be debuting at a local Santa Fe business. This land art exhibit will be made from recycled materials in the tradition of outsider art. Date TBD.
Suminagashi in the Park
Following a successful workshop featuring poetry and suminagashi in Santa Fe’s Railyard Park, Miriam and Isabel will curate the resulting installation piece. We will combine the suminagashi and text, and install it in hidden but findable locations in the Railyard Park. The pathway will be geocached, and locatable by GPS. We will also have maps. The work will be presented anonymously—and the paper and text may have two different authors. All participants will be listed and thanked as part of the pathway, and on this website. There will be an informal opening on September 8th. We’ll tell you when it is up, and you can walk it and share it with your friends. It’s a magical way to respond to a special spot in our city of Santa Fe. We look forward to working with you.
FREE workshop followed by art installation! We are currently accepting applications.
When: August 11
Where: Community Room in The Railyard Park
To register: Write to firstname.lastname@example.org with your phone number & email. We will have directions etc. Limited to 15-20 participants.
Japan Festival: May 19th, 2018. Maternal Mitochondria will be at this year’s Japan Cultural Festival! Catch us on Saturday, May 19th at the Santa Fe Convention Center.
